How to Find Individual Health Insurance

Unfortunately, there are several employers in Los Angeles that do not provide health insurance coverage for their employees.  This is often because it is just too expensive for the small business to afford to provide to their employees or because they simply don't offer it.

If you do not receive health insurance through your employer, you may be able to find an individual policy to ensure you have coverage.  This type of coverage is going to be more expensive than what you would obtain through an employer, as with job-based coverage your employer typically pays part of the premium.  But, because we never know what life is going to throw at us in Los Angeles, an individual health insurance policy is better than not having insurance at all.

Individual health insurance is available and it is often something that people who own their own small business or employees who do not have job based coverage typically try to take advantage of.  The first place that you will want to begin your search for health insurance is through an independent agent or even online.  If you're not sure where to find an independent agent, you can contact your state department of insurance, as these individuals are required to register with the state.  Independent insurance agents are able to assist you in locating a health insurance policy that will cover what you need to cover and will assist you in the enrollment process.

It's always a good idea to utilize an independent agent because health insurance policies are often tricky to maneuver around.  There is a lot of terminology involved that can easily leave you confused and frustrated, so having an agent that can assist you with the paperwork is very helpful.

Online, you will be able to locate several different companies and their options.  When you are comparing policies you need to be certain that you don't necessarily shop for the lowest premiums.  It is ideal to have a low premium, but you also want a low deductible.  The deductible is the amount of money that you will have to pay out of pocket in the event you become ill or need medical attention.  It is important that you find an individual health insurance policy that has a middle ground that you can afford both in premiums and in the deductible.

When you're looking at a policy be sure that you understand what is covered, what is not covered and when your coverage begins.  The level of coverage you can receive will vary widely and there should be a 10-day recession period available for you to determine if you really want to maintain the individual health insurance policy.
