What Does Full Coverage Car Insurance in Los Angeles, CA Mean?

As you cruise through the phone book of various Los Angeles, CA car insurance agencies you may have noticed the term "full coverage" insurance. While it seems as if the definition of full coverage insurance should be relatively simple, it has become confusing in recent years. This is partly because many LA insurance companies themselves are trying to avoid using the word. Why? Because it is misleading-there is no such thing as universal or "full" coverage, not in the automotive business.

What full coverage car insurance in Los Angeles usually implies is a combination of comprehensive and collision coverage. The term does not technically include liability insurance, which covers damages related to property (including the other driver's vehicle) as well as bodily injury and any other directly related expense. Remember that liability insurance is only insured up to a specific amount, after which, the damages become the policyholder's responsibility. Therefore, collision and comprehensive coverage can help a driver to pay for the car damages that no one else will touch, regardless of whose fault it is. (Compare this coverage with uninsured motorist insurance for a full view of the situation)

The term full coverage usually carries an implication of state-required coverage, perhaps with a meaning of full disclosure, in that the company lists all coverage items according to single limit or split limit liability. However, the term has never meant universal coverage, so it should never be seen as a full service contract. Collision damage refers to damage done to your vehicle directly due to an on-road collision. Collision may sometimes encompass other types of collision incidents involving automobiles, such as colliding with a piece of property or a tree. Comprehensive insurance refers to damage that results from anything other than a collision. For example, the theft of an automobile, vandalism, or even broken glass, can be insured under this policy.

Full coverage insurance, like all collision and comprehensive coverage, is optional. The only circumstance in which these plans would be required on a contract is if a Los Angeles car dealer or financing institution requested the coverage for the protection of both parties. After all, if a financing household member totals a car, this does not relieve him or her of paying off the note. However, since the motorist no longer has a car, why would he or she feel compelled to keep paying the note? Many consumers will conclude that bad credit is still less expensive than paying off an invisible car loan. So don't be surprised if an LA dealer requests full coverage insurance-it protects both parties for the duration of the loan.
